Part Two: Trance and Transformation
The first time I saw a serpent-flame, I felt a mix of awe and shock, as the hairs on the back of my neck rose — I instinctively knew what I was witnessing: the cone of power. The coven stood in a darkened Adelaide room, its walls painted deep indigo, the circle marked in white on the red cedar floorboards. At the centre, the cauldron belched a chaotic, luminous flame. Then it happened: the fire within spiralled upwards, like a conjured cobra from its basket, a serpent of flame coiling with force up into the air until it seemed to take on the form of a vast leviathan. I was struck with terror and exhilaration. I knew then, too, what the old books meant by the vinum sabbati, the exhilaration of the witches' wine: not a drink or potion but a state of consciousness. I was in an awake dream — I was in shock, but utterly intoxicated, it was overwhelming, but it was utterly real.
